Description
I began teaching at United Tribes Technical College in December 1998. I have to admit my knowledge of the Tribal College system was limited. I was aware of UTTC and some of the vocations that are offered, but I had no idea what really went on in “my own backyard”.
I chose the war bonnet to represent the achievements that our students earn while attending class and the achievements that are yet to come. The ghosted buffalo was chosen to represent the people and how the “buffalo people” and all native peoples still thrive. The inspiration for this piece came to me shortly after I started. I saw something happening at UTTC that very few non-native people (including myself, I am Slovenian by birth) get to see. A very concerted effort to integrate the modern world’s ways and yet preserve a most unique culture. I witnessed this rebirth of the spirit of the people everyday in more ways than I can tell you. There is a physical feeling of calm I experienced each morning as I enter the main gate that I’ve never encountered going to work before. I’m honored and proud to have been part of the tribal college system and to have a “front row seat” to such a noble cause.
