Description
If ever there was a symbol for perseverance it's this tree. After a recent visit to northern Minnesota where I grew up and while walking through Baptism State Park I happened upon this old friend. Growing on the windward side of the mouth Of the Baptism River it overlooks Lake Superior. It takes quite a beating from the lake's winds and frosty mists. Throughout my years in Minnesota I frequented this spot many times and I've witnessed the life of this tree, from a sapling to this mature - wise old tree. Many times throughout my life, and it's, I've watched as people have hung from it's branches, broken off it's limbs for firewood and I've even seen the whole tree set on fire. Through it all here it is almost 35 years later, still growing . . . attaching itself to bare rock and drawing what nourishment it needs to survive from god knows where. What this relatively small and unassuming pine tree has taught me is that life finds a way to survive. It's survival is a miracle and it has put the day to day ups and downs of our lives into a different perspective for me. I look at it with wonderment because of what this tree has put up with, both natural and man made, and still it stands and still it lives. I wrote this after I finished painting this in 1998. I still visit this tree and it is still growing. Since the original painting was completed - the Park Service in their infinite wisdom - have put a park bench under it and to hold the bench in place they've run bolts through its roots . . . but it still lives.
